The economy.  It’s a hot topic whether it’s a boom year or a bust.  Every country on the planet has many forms of commerce that power its society.  To get a feel for the local economy you may need to do a bit of digging.  You can take a multilevel approach to capturing how your travel destination exchanges money and goods.  Start with where you are.  If it’s a tourist area the pickings will be easy; street carts, souvenir shops, fast food restaurants, people peddling their wares.  And if that’s where your comfort level ends, feel free to skip to one of the other travel photography subjects listed below.

If you’re feeling the need for more of the picture (pun intended), start expanding outwards beyond the area around your hotel.  Look for fueling stations and grocery stores and note prices.  Wander along busy streets get a feel for how much traffic is pedestrian and how much is commerce.  Is there a well organized goods distribution system with trains, cargo ships and freight trucks or are things more haphazard in a one-off fashion?  What kind of goods are being moved around the country?  Are they made local or imported?

Not satisfied with just wandering around and observing?  Find a local industrial area.  This can be a fishing marina, steel mills, textiles or any number of other operations available in the local community that produce goods or services.  It can also be the financial district of larger cities or technology, entertainment or dining enclaves.  You may need to be cautious around certain industrial areas (power plants and very private companies come to mind).

These are just a few of the possibilities when looking to document the economy of an area you may be visiting.  The list can go on and on, but the important aspect of this travel photography subject is to step outside your normal way of viewing a destination and scratch a little beneath the surface.  From prosperous to poverty stricken, a country’s economy will likely have a unique feel, even while it may be similar to its neighbor.  It may be subsisting upon mostly internal trade on scant natural resources, or it may be an exporting power house.

While you will most certainly have an active, if minor, role in the economy during your travels, take a step back and find a way to communicate with friends and family back home what drives your destination’s economy.  And then feel free to share what you have found in the comments section below

There is a lot available on the subject, but in short the T/S lens (and the related movements of professional cameras) are some of the most varied, useful, and technically complex concepts in photography. Scheimpflug Movements would be a good place to start.

One can control almost all aspects of perspective, even the apparent location from which the photo was taken from, the apparent distance it was taken from, choosing which aspects of the photo are in and out of focus regardless of actual distance or relative placement, altering points of convergence, making objects look larger or smaller, closer or further away, and altering the apparent size/distance relationships to each other of objects in the frame, just for a starter.
There are advanced classes just to understand the basics, one that require the use of graphing calculators. It is not just a simple toy. It is one of the most subtle tools in photography.

Those ignorant of its uses can crank one of its movements all the way to one side, ignore the other movements, and get images that look like bad macro photography – what we see here – but that is a very small part of what these lenses are capable of. Even then, knowledge of the proper use of the lens can produce images that look EVEN MORE like miniatures than just cranking the tilt all the way the wrong way.

This “tutorial” would be like someone writing a tutorial on the iPhone 4 and only covering its use as a nutcracker and drink coaster.

okay .. i am not trying to stop anyone from buying this notebook .. i bought it just because i really loved the way it looked i dont care about all the high tech stuff and all , i just needed a notebook to replace my sony viao that crashed after only one year of use( of course after my warranty expired ) anyway .. like i said i bought the computer and only 2 days later i returned it to the store, and here s why.. we all know the fameous blue error screen , that appeared to me twice on the first day , my husband reported a third time lol and i promise i havent downloaded anything that would have caused that , nothing at all .. so i was like maybe i need to finish installing the updates and all , anyway the next day i tried to turn the computer on .. it wouldnt boot up!!!!! black screen and blinking caps lock and numerlock lights , that was it , i turned it off turned it back on nothing .. the computer decided to stop working two days after its purchase ..well i decided to give it another chance and i bought the same one again ,, but honestly after all the reviews i read about it here and other websites i am definitly going to return this one too..too bad i really liked it at first , but i d rather have my money back !!

In the past, we have spoken of an LG notebook model that was launched in Japan. Now it’s time to check out the LG x110 in our LG 110 notebook review. The first thing that we must mention at the beginning of this LG 110 notebook review is that this is a netbook. You know, that subcategory of notebooks which is composed of thin and light units that are highly portable and comes with the basic laptop components as all you can use them for is the basic computer tasking.

The price of the LG 110, also known as the LG X110 is $499 for the unit reviewed but if you want to choose a bigger battery (and I am assuming you will since it is important to have good battery on a small and ultraportable laptop), you will have to pay $529 for the laptop with the 6 cell battery included. As expected, this notebook uses a very low processor to run, which is the 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor. Aside from this weak processor, you only get 1 GB of RAM, which is quite the expected amount of RAM that you can get for this type of mini notebook.

The total storage capacity of the hard drive is limited to 160 GB which is fair enough if you consider the size of this notebook. The dimensions of this unit are 261.8 x 180 x 31 mm while the total weight of the system is 1.19 kg and 1.35 kilos if you go with the 6 cell battery. As you can see, this notebook is small enough to fit into most of your bags, backpack, suitcases, purses etc. and you can carry it around with you everywhere so you will never miss a computer when you need one.

As far as the display is concerned, this unit comes with a 10 inch display that comes with a native resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. As you can imagine, big web pages and documents are going to require a lot of scrolling and this is one of the disadvantages that come with using such a small notebook. Anyway, you are paying to be able to have computer access anywhere and this is priceless, especially for the business segment of consumers. Above the display you shall find a 1.3 MP camera that allows you to make video calls all over the world. The quality of the image is not the best, but it is decent and welcome at the same time. There is also an operating system that is shipped with this unit and this is the preloaded version of the Windows XP Home.

The selection of ports and connections of this unit is quite poor as you only get 3 USB ports, one VGA out, one SD card reader, an Ethernet port and the regular headphones out and microphone in jacks. The battery life is very disappointing for what is supposed to be a unit that you can use everywhere, even when there is no power source at hand. With the 3  cell battery, the LG 110 manages to stay on for only 2 hours and 10 minutes with the display brightness set to 70% and the wireless activated.

Around the time Steve Jobs unveiled the Apple iPad, a funny Photoshopped picture began making the rounds on the Web, showing Jobs with four iPhones crudely lashed together with duct tape. The picture’s unspoken message, of course, was that the iPad is just a big iPhone.

Well, something like that is actually coming true in the automotive battery field. It turns out that you can make a pretty good battery for a hybrid electric vehicle by assembling lots of small lithium-ion laptop battery cells—up to 2,000 of them, in fact—into one big pack.

This is the approach being pursued by Boston-Power, the Westborough, MA, startup best known for making the environmentally friendly Sonata batteries used in many Hewlett-Packard notebook computers. And in a sign that Boston-Power is getting serious about marketing its so-called Swing cells to electric-vehicle makers, the company is expected to announce today the appointment of retired General Motors executive Robert Purcell to its board of directors.

As the leader of GM’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Group from 1994 to 2002, Purcell helped to launch the EV-1, GM’s first modern electric vehicle, as well as an electric pickup truck and early hybrid cars. He went on to lead global sales, planning, and strategic alliances for GM’s Powertrain Group, managing $2 billion a year in direct engine and transmission sales and $1 billion in licensing activity.

n other words, he’s been around the block a few times in the automotive industry. And while he says he’s “seen a lot of things” in his work with GM and its partners, he’s never seen a car powered by the equivalent of 2,000 laptop batteries.

“Of course, this isn’t just as simple as strapping together a bunch of laptop cells,” Purcell told Xconomy last week. “It’s about integrating from cell to module and then from module to pack. Boston-Power has some very clever ideas about how to do that in a cost-effective way. And this isn’t a science fair project—they are doing the hands-on work to move from cell to module to pack in a way that will work in a typical light-duty passenger vehicle.”

Boston-Power has been eyeing the transportation market since 2008, when it expanded the R&D facilities at its Westborough headquarters and began to build prototype battery packs for power-assisted bikes and scooters. So far, the company has tested Swing-based battery packs in just a few hundred cars—but Christina Lampe-Onnerud, the company’s founder and CEO, predicts that eventually the Swing and other lithium-ion batteries will completely displace the nickel metal hydride batteries used in today’s mass-produced hybrid cars, such as the Toyota Prius. That’s mainly because lithium-ion batteries have a much higher energy density, a measure of the amount of current a battery can produce per unit of volume.

So the work Boston-Power has done to engineer greener, longer-lasting, faster-recharging lithium-ion batteries for laptops will eventually pay dividends in the automotive market, Lampe-Onnerud believes. “The rigor we brought to the portable space is really paying off as we enter the transportation market,” she says. “The fundamental carryover is the absolute dedication to safety, the very good thermal management, and the temperature window for high performance, which is really wide. We are already in mass production, and we have applications that match some of the expectations of the automotive industry—although everybody around the table admits that this is an emerging market and there’s still a lot to learn.”

That’s one of the reasons Boston-Power recruited Purcell, who will be valuable to the startup not just for his understanding of electric and hybrid vehicles but for his connections across the automotive business. Part of Purcell’s last job at GM was managing the giant automaker’s relationships with the other powertrain makers that license its technology. “What was really interesting about that assignment was that I got to know every major automaker in the world, and virtually all of the companies supplying power systems to the auto industry,” he says. “I actually spent more time inside other companies than I did inside GM. That will be a real advantage as we begin to position Boston-Power” to sell batteries to carmakers.

Purcell says he was attracted to a board position at Boston-Power in part because of the company’s high engineering standards. (While lithium-ion technology itself is quite venerable, Boston-Power has developed novel cell geometries, wiring arrangements, and control electronics that make its batteries longer-lived, less likely to overheat, and faster to recharge than conventional lithium-ion cells.)

“I have seen a lot of battery companies over 15-plus years and I have to say that Boston-Power clearly came to the top of the class in terms of its system engineering expertise,” Purcell says. “A battery is more than just a bag of chemicals, it’s an integrated system, and I never saw a company that made a more intelligent set of tradeoffs on the overall system design. The safety, the high energy density, the recharge time—these are the right kinds of elements to bring into play to be successful for an automotive application.”

On top of all that, says Purcell, Boston-Power has “put a real emphasis on creating a green battery,” becoming the only battery maker to win Nordic Eco-label certification for the long life of its batteries and its low use of heavy metals. “To me, it’s simple—a green car deserves a green battery,” Purcell says.

But when Lampe-Onnerud lists Boston-Power’s fundamental advantages as it goes head-to-head with other battery suppliers in the auto industry—including Watertown, MA-based A123Systems (NASDAQ: AONE), which plans to build a production plant outside Detroit in Livonia, MI, to supply battery pack to Chrysler—she comes back to the small form factor of its Swing batteries, which are identical in size to its 6.5-centimeter-long Sonata batteries.

The small size means not only that the cells can be flexibly arranged into modules and packs that fit almost any space, but that there’s less chance of catastrophic overheating, a problem that’s led to well-publicized episodes of exploding laptops, plug-in hybrid meltdowns, and battery recalls. “We feel strongly that the cell elements that are put together into packs need to be small to preserve safety and control,” Lampe-Onnerud says. “That is absolutely critical, and I don’t think the industry had that focus before we came along.”
